Folk Lane
A Familiar Place, a Story of Its Own.
Some places become part of a neighbourhood long before anyone thinks about branding them that way. For years, TOBY'S on Sukhumvit 38 had been a familiar destination for brunch and coffee. But the distinctive character of this location presented an opportunity to create something of its own: a brand that felt more rooted in the neighbourhood and the everyday lives of the people around it. Our challenge began with understanding what made the original café special, and how those qualities could evolve into a new identity. The result was Folk Lane. Not simply a new name for an existing café, but a new personality built around the warmth, familiarity and sense of community that made the place worth returning to.
“Not every new beginning needs a new address.”

Finding Its Own Place.
Before thinking about how Folk Lane should look, we needed to define how it should feel. The answer came from the everyday experience of a neighbourhood café: familiar faces, good food made with care, and a place where people feel comfortable being themselves. We built the brand around a simple belief: food that feels right, shared in everyday life. Nothing overly complicated or dressed up for the occasion. Just honest ingredients, consistent quality and an atmosphere that makes every visit feel easy. This thinking shaped Folk Lane into a brand that is genuine, approachable and quietly playful, guided by a fitting sentiment: By a friend, for a friend.
Made to Feel Familiar.
The identity follows the same straightforward spirit as the brand itself. Nothing too polished, too precious or too serious. A bold, slightly imperfect wordmark gives Folk Lane a friendly presence. Warm yellow brings optimism, balanced by soft green, cream and coffee-inspired browns. Hand-drawn food illustrations add a personal touch, while simple grid layouts and expressive typography keep everything organised without losing character. Rather than building the identity around an elaborate visual metaphor, we focused on making it feel natural to the place: warm, honest and easy to recognise. The result is a design language that feels less like a carefully staged café and more like somewhere you'd happily return to.
“Good food tastes even better when it feels like home.”

By a Friend, for a Friend.
A neighbourhood café becomes familiar through the little things. The menu you recognise, the coffee you come back for, and the people who make you feel welcome. We carried Folk Lane's easygoing personality across its menus, coffee cups, packaging, uniforms, signage and everyday communications. Bold typography sits alongside playful illustrations and simple ingredient labels, creating a consistent identity without making every application look identical. It's a flexible system designed to feel right at home, whether on a coffee cup, a paper bag or a sign outside the café. A new name for an old favourite, with a personality that belongs to the neighbourhood.
