Central Khonkaen Campus
Finding our way through the fabric of Khon Kaen.
For its second destination in Khon Kaen, Central set out to create something beyond the familiar shopping mall. Central Khonkaen Campus brings together retail, culture, creativity and green spaces in a new gathering place shaped by the city's youthful energy and local character. At the heart of the architectural and interior design concept is แคน-แก่น-คูณ, bringing together the khaen, Isan's traditional musical instrument; the cultural roots of Khon Kaen; and the golden shower flower, the province's floral emblem. These local references are reinterpreted through contemporary forms, materials and spatial experiences. Our task was to carry this same sense of place into the signage and wayfinding system, helping visitors navigate the space while making the signs feel like a natural part of the architecture.
“A place woven from many stories deserves a design language that ties them together.”

A familiar craft, seen through a different lens.
Weaving has long been part of Khon Kaen's cultural identity. It even inspired the architecture of the city's first Central, through the familiar form of the woven sticky-rice basket. For Central Khonkaen Campus, the story takes on another dimension. The traditional แคน-แก่น-คูณ textile pattern offers a connection between local craftsmanship and the architectural language of the new destination. We drew from the rhythm, structure and textures of Isan weaving, translating these familiar qualities into a contemporary signage design rather than reproducing traditional patterns as decoration. The result is a visual language that feels connected to its cultural roots, yet simple and refined enough to belong naturally within the surrounding architecture.
Where craft meets clarity.
A good wayfinding system should be easy to understand. But that doesn't mean it has to feel separate from its surroundings. Taking cues from woven structures, we developed a family of signs that brings together slender lines, layered details and softly rounded forms. A restrained palette of greens, warm neutrals and earthy accents complements the natural materials and architectural character of the space. These details are balanced with clear typography, directional arrows and pictograms, ensuring that the visual character of the signage never gets in the way of its purpose. From suspended directional signs to freestanding directories and smaller wall markers, each element follows the same design principles while adapting to its location and function. The result is a signage system that feels considered as part of the architecture, yet remains immediately useful to the people moving through it.
“The best directions don't just tell you where to go. They make you feel part of where you are.”
.
A natural part of the journey.
Central Khonkaen Campus brings together different experiences, from lively retail spaces to places for gathering, exploring and taking a moment away from the city. The signage needed to work across these changing environments without losing its consistency. We considered how each sign would be seen in relation to its surroundings, how information could be organised clearly, and how the system could guide visitors without overwhelming the space. The architecture provides the setting, while the signage introduces a quieter layer of order and guidance. Together, they create an environment that invites people to move freely, discover new corners and feel at ease in a place designed to bring people together.
“A little local character, woven into every direction.”
